Al-Hol is the most dangerous refugee camp in Syria, if not the Middle East – a volatile makeshift home for 70,000 individuals displaced by Daesh (aka ISIS, or the Islamic State of Iraq & Syria) that nonetheless also harbours Daesh members. Mahmud and Ziyad make it their mission to venture inside this terrifying encampment and rescue dozens, perhaps even hundreds of Yazidi women and girls who have been abducted, held here and sold as sex slaves – the Sabaya.
Winner of the Best Director Award for World Documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Hogir Hiori’s unflinching, immersive documentary takes us into the heart of a broken community – and into the lives and minds of those daring outsiders who have dedicated themselves to freeing imprisoned women and girls from it, often equipped with nothing more than a cellphone and a gun. Bold and brave, vital and visceral, Sabaya tells a story rarely, if ever, captured on film – and will surely number among the most important films of the year.
