Set in Kofu in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture after the 2008 financial crash, Saudade is widely considered Tomita Katsuya’s breakthrough film. As the city grapples with a struggling economy, foreign labourers are the first to be affected. Takeru is one such immigrant worker, who, despite being made redundant and contending with everyday racism, manages to find solace in a local hip hop ‘gang’.
