Thorold Dickinson’s deeply atmospheric adaptation of Pushkin’s short story has won praise aplenty from the likes of Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson – and for the first time since its 1949 release, this classic drama is back in cinemas following a spectacular 4K restoration.
St Petersburg, 1806 – and a city in the grip of gambling fever. Night in and night out, Captain Herman Suvorin (Anton Walbrook) watches huge fortunes being lost and won at a card game called faro, resisting the temptation to wager his meagre savings. But then he hears talk of Countess Ranevskaya (Dame Edith Evans), who apparently sold her soul to the devil in exchange for the knowledge that allows her to win every hand she plays – and he soon sets out to wrest the secret from the ageing dame. Don’t miss this long-overdue chance to revisit a lost masterpiece of British cinema.
