In a small Irish village in 1862, 11-year-old Anna is alleged to have not eaten in four months, yet miraculously remains alive and well. English nurse Lib Wright is sent there with the task of observing Anna to deduce if her claim of ‘surviving on manna from heaven’ is a legitimate miracle or a blasphemous fabrication. Sharing watch duties with a nun from the neighbouring town, who is open to the possibility of the Divine at work, defiant pragmatist Lib is unwavering in her scepticism, placing her faith in the rational order of science.
Subtly weaving hints of gothic horror into this claustrophobic tale of religious fervour and potentially deadly delusion Emma Donoghue, in collaboration with Alice Birch and Lelio, adapts her own novel for the screen with exhilarating results. Demonstrating Lelio’s remarkable ability to offset traditional storytelling with bold formal experimentation, The Wonder is an ambitious and provocative endeavour, grounded by a captivating central performance from Florence Pugh.
The screening will be presented with subtitles for the D/deaf and people experiencing hearing loss and an audio-description soundtrack for customers who are blind or partially-sighted. Headphones are available on request.
