A woman stares into the distance, serious and contemplating. Behind her is a gothic grey sky and rugged landscape
The Wonder, dir. Sebastián Lelio, UK / Ireland, 2022, 103 min., English, 15

An English nurse in 19th-century Ireland finds herself caught between faith and reason in the latest feature from Chilean director Sebastián Lelio (the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman, Gloria Bell), a potent and quietly chilling period drama blessed by a compelling central performance from Florence Pugh.

Rural Ireland, 1862, and 11-year-old Anna (Kila Lord Cassidy) has apparently – perhaps miraculously – survived for months without food. Dubious of the claims emerging from Anna’s devoutly religious community, English nurse Lib Wright (Pugh) is invited to cross the sea and watch the young girl to see if she really is surviving on ‘manna from heaven’ – or if something more suspicious and sinister is going on. Co-written by Emma Donoghue (Room) from her own novel, Lelio’s feature is a rich, tense tale that pits faith against science, scepticism against belief, and medical assistance against divine intervention.
