Panel Discussion: Machine Futurisms
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Book tickets

Join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion in response to Under Construction, Geumhyung Jeong’s exploration of human-machine interactions, and the dynamic relationships between objects, performance, the animate, and the inanimate.

Moderated by Kate Brown (Senior Editor at Artnet News, co-host of The Art Angle podcast, and Founder of Ashley Gallery, Berlin), the panel will feature Dr. Soomi Park (London-based designer and lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London) and Dr. Lisa Moravec (writer, curator, critic, editor, lecturer, and body practitioner). Together, they will delve into the central themes of the current exhibition while exploring the ethical and philosophical tensions that extend beyond the realm of art practice.
Kate Brown is Senior Editor at Artnet News and a host of The Art Angle podcast, where she frequently interviews artists, journalists, and authors. She is currently a mentor for the Berlin Program for Artists and recently taught a course on art criticism for the 2024 Summer University of the Arts in Berlin.

Dr. Lisa Moravec
is an art historian/performance scholar, writer, critic, and curator. Since 2017, she has lectured and taught at universities and art schools in the UK, Austria, and Switzerland. She researches interdisciplinary forms of contemporary performance in the visual and performing arts, with a focus on human, animal, and machine intersections and differences. She holds an interdisciplinary PhD from the Drama, Theatre, and Dance Department at Royal Holloway (University London). During the past two years, she has been a fellow at steirischer herbst and has received several grants for her first postdoc project for a research project on “Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn” (1985), building on her long-standing engagement with the work of Rose English and feminism as a form of social critique. She recently co-curated the exhibition Rose English: Suddenly Begin in Splendour (incl. ex. cat.) and the surrounding performance programme at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg (July 2024-Feb 2025). As of winter 2025, she will lead the FWF project “The Performance of Critique: AI, Bodily Intelligence, and Posthumanist Aesthetics”, situated at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Besides peer-reviewed essays, art criticism, and edited journal issues, her publications include the books Dressaged Animality: Human and Animal Actors in Contemporary Performance (Routledge, 2024) and Posthumanist Approaches to a Critique of Political Economy: Dissident Practices (Bloomsbury, spring 2025).

Dr. Soomi Park is a London-based designer and a lecturer in the Department of Design at Goldsmiths University of London. Her work explores the complex relationship between emerging technologies and human desires, with research topics spanning plastic surgery, anxiety, privacy, robotics, and embarrassment. Her works encompass a wide range of mediums, including speculative objects/installations, film, performance, and wearables. Her work has been showcased in various international museums and galleries, such as the V&A Museum, the Design Museum, Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne, Science Gallery Dublin, and Ars Electronica Linz. She holds a PhD in Media and Arts Technology from the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London, and an MA in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art.
