Jennifer Walshe is an Irish composer, vocalist and artist, as well as the Professor of Composition at the University of Oxford. With a background in experimental music, she has long been interested in the ways that AI can be used to compose and improvise. This led to her writing the long essay 13 Ways of Looking at AI, Art & Music, which explores the subject in a playful, nuanced and timely way – and caused something of a sensation when first published online. The essay is now being published by Unsound as a carefully designed book, and will be launched as part of the festival’s 2025 London events, where Jennifer will give a talk.
To quote Jennifer Walshe, “AI is not a singular phenomenon. It is many different things to many different people, a planetary-scale project which manifests for each of us locally in the same way that the climate makes a part of itself known to us through the weather on our street. If we are going to try and think seriously about AI, we need to think on the scale of AI. We need to think like the networks do - in higher dimensions, from multiple positions. Beyond our local weather.”
The talk will be followed by a Q&A with Michał Gulik, curator of Unsound’s discourse program, and the book will be available for sale.
