ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
The first time I crossed paths with London-based writer and director Maysoon Pachachi was on al-Mutannabi Street in Baghdad in 2019 when she was making this film. Her characteristic presence, curiosity, and seriousness combine in this first narrative feature by a filmmaker otherwise engaged in documentary processes. The film interweaves stories at the particular hour of unraveling-into-sectarianism, in the year 2006. Situated at a crux, it is perhaps a crucial basis for understanding the revolutionary desire among Iraq’s youth and their uprising some fifteen years later.
