In Der Rosenkönig, Magdalena Montezuma plays the owner of a rose plantation in Portugal, who lives with her son (Mostefa Djadjam) in anxious dependence, until an Italian worker (Antonio Orlando) steals him away for himself. Where here-to-fore Schroeter’s gay subjectivity had been expressed through the vessels of female performers, the film is most explicitly queer. An unutterably beautiful and sumptuous tale of desire, devotion and sacrifice.

Montezuma, who had known while filming that her life was ending from cancer, died four weeks after the film's completion.
