Zooland, dir. Pary El-Qalqili, Palestine / Germany 2016
‘When will we be liberated? When?’ At a small zoo in Palestine, groundskeepers and employees are filmed in various states of waiting. What is enacted in each quiet moment is a very specific, if not crushing, quotidian; the gestures and words of the workers reveal in each detail the overarching reality of Israeli military occupation. Pary El-Qalqili is a filmmaker and writer who lives in Berlin.
Am I the Ageless Object at the Museum?, dir. Noor Abuarafeh, 2018
Set inside a zoo, probably in Cairo, the film is narrated from the perspective of one who is passing through. Indeed, artist and filmmaker Noor Abuarafeh observes a particular existential condition outside her native Palestine. The film holds a mirror between out-of-land and out-of-body, reflecting on colonialism and alienation through the various animals on display.
The Kingdom of Women: Ein el Hilweh, dir. Dahna Abourahme, Lebanon 2010
When I asked my friend Raya Ziada, who lives in Ramallah, for a film recommendation, she immediately responded with this one by Dahna Abourahme. Interviews alongside interpretive animation, we learn how Palestinian women in Ein el Hilweh refugee camp in south Lebanon ensured the survival of their community when all the men were imprisoned amid the atrocities of the 1982 Israeli invasion.
