6 – 14 June 2026

The Dark Wood is a new film and sound installation by Space Afrika & Valentin Noujaïm, featuring the film Opera Omnia (2025). Across film, dialogue and sound, the exhibition approaches urban space as a site of memory, recurrence and disappearance.

Shot on 35mm, Opera Omnia follows a night-time passage through Manchester. Drawing on Dante’s Inferno as a loose point of departure, the film moves through themes of descent, return and encounter. Dante’s text continues through a new dialogue-based work and a sound installation composed by Space Afrika for the exhibition.

Together, the works hold image, voice and sound in close relation, moving through repetition, interruption and drift. The city appears not simply as setting, but as a place in which traces, histories and voices continue to accumulate.
About the artists
Valentin Noujaïm is a French-Lebanese artist and filmmaker based between Paris and Athens. Working across film, installation and research-led narrative forms, his practice explores how individuals and communities navigate spiritual, political and architectural collapse. Through hybrid cinematic languages that combine analogue and digital image-making, he constructs worlds in which myth, memory and urban space converge.

He made the La Défense trilogy, which has been presented internationally at the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, Centre Pompidou, Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Lafayette Anticipations, ICA London and CIRCA Prize, among others. In 2025, he presented his first institutional solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel.

Space Afrika are musicians and composers Josh Inyang and Joshua Tarelle Reid. Working across sound, performance and installation, their practice brings together elements of ambient, electronic, experimental and contemporary composition to explore memory, place and the emotional conditions of lived experience. Their work is shaped by a strong sense of atmosphere, structure and spatial attention.

They have released two acclaimed albums, Somewhere Decent To Live (2018) and Honest Labour (2021), and have presented performances and installations internationally. Their work has been shown at venues including Gladstone Gallery, Southbank Centre, Berlin Atonal, Factory International, the Victoria and Albert Museum, CCA Berlin, Passage Berlin and Armani Silos. In 2025, they debuted Opera Omnia, a collaborative project with Valentin Noujaïm, at Fondation Cartier
With support from Fluxus Art Projects and Concrete Projects.
