Directed by Portugese filmmaker João Botelho, As Meninas Exemplares is whimsical ode to childhood, inspired by the painter Paula Rego and based on the writing of the Russian writer, the Countess of Ségur, known for her seminal children's books which depicted a turbulent kingdom of women. Botelho brings together a motley crew of women to play the Countess's heroines: the good, deceitful, cruel – and most importantly, the rebellious, with sensual and tender theatricality.
