Blue ID, dir. Vuslat Karan & Burcu Melekoğlu, Turkey 2022, 85 mins.
Pink or blue? In Turkey, before you even know someone’s name, you used to be able to tell their gender by the color of their ID. Transitioning can be challenging enough, but what about going through that process under the media spotlight?
On October 4, 2012, Rüzgar Erkoçlar received his first testosterone injection, an important step in his gender confirmation, but only the beginning of a long and arduous journey. Winner of the Audience Award at IDFA in Amsterdam, Blue ID is a captivating exploration of Rüzgar’s reality, fighting to live authentically against all odds.
The screening on the 16 May will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Vuslat Karan and Burcu Melekoğlu, moderated by Melanie Iredale, Reclaim The Frame.
The screening on the 18 May will be followed by a Q&A with activists from Maqfa UK, moderated by curator and art mediator Mine Kaplangı.
