Nicolás Rincón Gille’s three feature-length documentaries – Those Waiting in the Dark, The Embrace of the River and Wounded Night – collectively painted a devastating picture of Colombia in the first two decades of this century. His first dramatic feature returns to the same terrifying territory to equally haunting effect, inspired by some of the real-life testimonies the director sourced for his previous work.
Rural Colombia, 2002. José (José Arley de Jesús Carvallido Lobo) returns from a night fishing to discover that paramilitaries have taken his two sons, probably killed them and most likely thrown them into the Magdalena River. José is determined to find their bodies, lay them to rest and free their souls – but such a mission is fraught with dangers of its own. Aided by a compelling performance from his non-professional lead, Rincón Gille tells this tale with power and warmth.
