In Focus: Meriem Bennani
Programme 1 (in collaboration with Orian Barki)
Institute of Contemporary Arts
2 Lizards, dir. Meriem Bennani, 2020, 30 mins

Before their most recent collaboration on Bouchra, Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani’s film 2 Lizards was an early COVID lockdown phenomenon. Using their collaboration as a starting point, this programme weaves threads of both of their practices together to find a shared language that reflects the world around them.

Gradual Kingdom, 14 mins
Made for a show of the same name in 2015, Gradual Kingdom takes Bennani’s hometown of Rabat as a study in human behaviour, drawing out the subtle idiosyncrasies of those around her. Using iPhone footage, Bennani adds in playful, animated elements, creating the basis of a visual language that recurs throughout her filmography.

Shooting Days, dir. Orian Barki, 27 mins
A lo-fi work of exploratory nature, Shooting Days is Orian Barki’s first film, made while she was at film school. In diaristic snippets of everyday life in occupied Palestine, a queer coming-of-age journey emerges.

Anatomy of An Artist: Meriem Bennani, dir. Orian Barki 7 mins
Commissioned by Nowness on the occasion of Bennani’s commission for the High Line in New York and Audemars Piguet Contemporary, this short film directed by Barki reveals elements of Bennani’s artistic process through a humorous and intimate lens. 2 Lizards, 2020, dir. Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, 30 mins
Originally released as short videos on Benanni’s Instagram account, 2 Lizards marks Bennani and Barki’s first collaboration. In COVID-era New York, two animated, anthropomorphized lizards move through uncertainty and isolation, finding tender and touching moments of community and connection.

Total runtime: 80 mins
In Focus: Meriem Bennani is curated by Myriam Mouflih and Abiba Coulibaly.
