Programme 2
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Ghariba, dir. Mereim Bennani, 2017, 19 mins

This programme spans the breadth of Bennani’s oeuvre, using three touchstone works from distinct periods of her practice. The screening will be contextualised by a post-film Q&A where Bennani will reflect on the evolution of her practice and the urgencies that motivate her as an artist making work today.

Ghariba, 2017, 19 mins
In Ghariba, Bennani’s gaze turns to the inner lives of a group of women, navigating love and romance, dating and friendship. Inspired by the aesthetic and narrative language of reality television, Bennani’s playful and humorous film gives voice to how these women navigate aging, desire and artifice.

Party on the CAPS, 2018, 26 mins
The first film in Bennani’s Life on the CAPS trilogy, Party on the CAPS introduces us to the boisterous fictive croco community, detained for generations on an island turned refugee camp located in the Atlantic ocean. In this space of detainment, Bennani critiques and ridicules contemporary border, body and digital politics in an uncanny universe in which animated, enhanced and real-world footage bleed into each other.

Cursed Objects, 2022, 5 mins
Made to accompany a sculptural installation, Cursed Objects is a surreal visualisation of domestic objects come alive to show the humorous and latent sinister potentialities of life within banal, household items.

Followed by an in-person Q&A with Meriem Bennani

Total runtime: 50 mins + Q&A
In Focus: Meriem Bennani is curated by Myriam Mouflih and Abiba Coulibaly.
