As the Democratic Republic of Congo attempts to revive the Grand Inga Dam project with an ambition to power Africa, Kinshasa’s 17 million inhabitants only light source are battery-powered LEDs. ‘Kinshasa does not fall asleep, it is in perpetual resilience,’ observes the filmmaker of his hometown. Shot almost entirely at night, Rising Up at Night explores cinematic darkness in both a physical and spiritual sense, and immerses us in the lived reality of a nocturnal city.
