Small Hours of the Night
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Small Hours of the Night, dir. Daniel Hui, Singapore 2024, English, Mandarin, Malay with English subtitles, 103 min.

Drawing on the historic case of a ‘subversive’ tombstone, Hui’s minimalist yet suspenseful drama draws together some key moments of political resistance in Singapore. Absurd and troublesome dialogue echoes in a smoke-filled, dimly lit room, slowly revealing contradictions, hypocrisies and possible new meanings. Challenging assumptions that we accept as true, this allusive black-and-white film is an eloquently defiant response to our current political moment.
