The mid-1990s, on Sibuyan Island in the Philippines: Eli is a reserved young man carrying the weight of a burden that his community refuses to acknowledge. Retreating into a world of isolation, he compulsively listens on a Walkman to recordings he made in the aftermath of a terrible incident. But when Eli witnesses a mysterious plane crash in the island’s densely forested mountains, he begins to confront his trauma. Stunningly visualised, Ryan Machado’s atmospheric character study asks troubling questions about queerness, abuse, and stigma. Commencing as a quiet examination of personal anguish, Raging evolves into a parable about how silence and denial corrode both human lives and the natural world that sustains them.
