Where Comes Mulan (木蘭何處), dir. Tianyi Zheng, China/Netherlands/Hong Kong 2026, 61 mins, Mandarin with English subtitles

Book tickets

Artist and filmmaker Tianyi Zheng returns to her ancestral village in Huangpi, Wuhan, the purported hometown of Mulan, the legendary figure known for fighting battles while disguised as a male warrior. Intimate conversations with relatives and local residents lead Zheng to trace how Mulan has been remembered or forgotten in everyday life, and her image transformed into a powerful tourism brand. Walking through tourist sites and abandoned ruins, she questions the gap between lived memory and official narrative. Things take a radical turn when performance artist Qiaochu Guo arrives, and the film begins to contemplate Mulan through a queer lens. With documentary and performative elements, Where Comes Mulan intertwines the spectral and the personal, excavating cultural mythology while offering a deeply personal reflection on displacement, queerness, and identity.
