For Hania Rani the word 'Nostalgia' is heavy with meanings and interpretation. It carries within not only the capacity of the word itself, but also the sound, image, smell or texture that we all connect with it. Nostalgia is a vast, swampy space and in this sense it inhabits, rather than being inhabited. And her forthcoming live album Nostalgia is the first album to present both Rani’s music and her photos together.
Her first ‘real’ live album, recorded in a space with significant meaning for Rani as an artist and person the Polish Radio studios in Warsaw. With Nostalgia Hania presents the studios through her own eyes as somewhere unique and unknown. A place of work, but something more, a place of ghosts and hidden meanings, or inspiration and mystery. By choosing to present her music, juxtaposed with her own evocative analogue photos of the studios, Rani gives us a closer look not only at a body of work but the entire artistic trajectory - from the composing process, through performance to recording – all seen through the artists eyes.
For Rani it is an experimental step – the first time she brings her sonic and visual worlds together in a combined presentation and perhaps the first tentative steps towards following the path of other artists who found the space of one medium limiting in order to express certain qualities.
Nostalgia will be presented as an audio-visual experience with the album played in full for the first time and accompanied by a specially commissioned film presenting Rani’s accompanying photos and text on the cinema screen.
The screening will be followed by an Artist Q&A with Mari* (Gondwana Records) and a post event signing session.
