Recuperating in Saint Tropez from the stress induced by the production of Salomé, Schroeter met actress Carole Bouquet, 23 years-old and the star of Buñuel’s That Obscure Object of Desire. Inspired by her stardom, his reading into anti-psychiatry and witch-hunting he set to work making Day of the Idiots, a raw study of confinement and disintegration set largely within the confines of a psychiatric hospital in Prague.
