After thirteen years at the Düsseldorf Theatre, Schroeter returned to theatrical filmmaking with Malina. Adapted for the screen from Ingeborg Bachmann’s 1971 novel by the Austrian playwright and novelist Elfriede Jelinek, the film is a somber and strange exploration of passion and self destruction inside a Viennese apartment.

The screening will be preceded by an introduction from Laura Staab.

Laura Staab is a writer and editor from London. She has written on art cinema and experimental film for outlets including Another Gaze, FIDback, Notebook, RE:VOIR, and Sight & Sound.
