By the end of 1968 Schroeter had acquired a 16mm Beaulieu camera with which he began making longer work in black and white that became points of departure in his art. This screening presents three such pieces.
Programme
Neurasia (1968), 36mins
Carla Aulaulu, Magdalena Montezuma, Rita Bauer and Steven Adamczewski move to the Percy Sledge song ‘My Special Prayer’ in a trance-like emblem of affect beyond words.
Argila (1968), 36mins
Schroeter’s experiment with split-screen cinema. A triangular dance of lovers plays out across split screens, mirroring desire, jealousy and the alchemy of perception, transforming a simple moment into a resonant play of presence and absence, recalling Andy Warhol’s twin-projector Chelsea Girls (1966).
Aggression (1968), 22mins
A film about violence and gender and cinematic gaze.
