Salomé + introduction
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Salomé, dir. Werner Schroeter, West Germany 1971, 81 min.

Largely unnoticed upon its release but later described by critic Gary Indiana as “one of the most beautiful adaptations of [Wilde’s] text text to film ever made,” Schroeter’s Salomé was made in Lebanon with a close cadre of friend-collaborators with funding from the German television network ZDF. It closely restages the biblical story of Salome, her infatuation with John the Baptist and her request for his head as a prize for her dance for King Herod on the steps of Baalbeck, performed in a single, continuous perspective, giving it a painterly, theatrical quality.

This screening will be preceded by an introduction from Siavash Minoukadeh.
