One of Schroeter’s more narrative works, and first commercial release, The Kingdom of Naples was made on a meagre budget compared to its ambition (shooting on Super 16mm later blown up to 35mm to cut down costs), taking inspiration from Buñuel’s Los olvidados and Wiseman’s Titicut Folies as it chronicles 1943 to 1978 in the lives of two Neapolitan families, or more precisely, the lives of two children born at the end of the war, as the filmmaker himself. A melodramatic epic that looks to community and love, Church and Communism, poverty and spirit.
