Time to Play: Films by Jacques Rozier

Summer of 1960. In Paris, Michel (Jean-Claude Aimini) works as a cableman on a TV set - a demanding job, but a great way to pick up girls. This is how he meets Juliette (Stefania Sabatini) and Liliane (Yveline Céry), who swear to not let any man interfere with their friendship.

His military service in war-torn Algeria looming on the horizon, Michel decides to take a holiday in Corsica, where the two best friends soon join him for some lighthearted fun. But under the blazing sun, and with the ticking clock of Michel's departure, emotions run high and hearts are more easily broken.

Capturing both the giddy thrill of innocent flirtation and the anguish of youth faced with an uncertain future, Jacques Rozier's debut feature was championed by his contemporaries François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.

"The film's mighty originality - in its drama, tone, methods, images, dialogue, performance, and political audacity - is both immensely inspiring to other filmmakers … it's a film that belongs to its historical moment but also reflects it from the outside like a magnifying mirror - and these qualities suggest the manifold, elusive nature of Rozier's art."
– Richard Brody, The New Yorker
